Christianity. "It works".

 @aaronchandler2380

To a Christian, I really don’t think it matters whether it’s true or not.

Because it works?
 @aleguitarra because it's easier to cast all of your shortcomings and flaws onto a god who forgives you of everything than it is for you to work on yourself and take full accountability.

 @Nash_son_of_Zeus I know people who changed a lot... So... Somehow it works for many...
 @aleguitarra  Fair point. But ... The same thing works for people converting to Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and even atheism. For example, Derek Lambert (of Mythvision) had to de-convert from Christianity to non-theism, to kick his heroin addiction, and get his life together. The differences: Unlike Christianity, ... 1. Nobody pretends that the healing potential of atheism counts as *proof* that atheism is the "one true path to enlightenment." 2. Nobody had to lie to Derek about the justifications, terms, and conditions of atheism, to bypass his consent, to get him to accept atheism. 3. Nobody threatened Derek with eternal conscious torment to ensure he would adopt atheism and to ensure he'd stick with it. 4. Nobody had to bribe Derek with an unsigned I.O.U. from a Magic-Daddy; good for One Free Eternity of spirituality-themed "totally not hedonism". 5. Nobody tried to obligate Derek to believe ... on bad evidence ... that he should base his life on ancient rumors about anything a Jewish carpenter zombie (or meat puppet) ever said or did. 6. Nobody had to exploit the potential of Derek having an external locus of identity ... to create vulnerable identity-dependence, so that some rando human could assume direct control and then exploit Derek as a source of material assets for an authoritarian Psy-Op. 7. Atheism does not come with doctrines that would weaponize him against vulnerable people (including his own children) "in the name of love". 8. Atheism posits no deceptions or manipulations about what healthy relationships look like. 9. Atheism doesn't try to convince anyone that when their brain releases feel-good neurotransmitter chemicals ...that it's a "Holy Spirit" and proof that atheism is true. 10. Atheism doesn't try to convince anyone that when their brain releases feel-bad neurotransmitter chemicals ...that it's a "demonic presence" and proof that atheism is true. 11. Nobody tried to tell Derek that he owes it to a Universe-Creator to indoctrinate defenseless children in the name of atheism. 12. Nobody tried to tell Derek that he should feel SHAME for thoughts and feeling (or actions he commited decades ago) ... so that he'd need to be "forgiven" for the failings innate to our species, and then insist that he's neither qualified nor entitled to forive himself, ...and that the only way he can be forgiven is to surrender to the "authority" of mere fallible men who claim without proof to speak by a hidden and ultimate authority. 13. Nor does atheism have to ignore or misrepresent history, science, or logic. 14. Nor does atheism function as an international network of special opportunities for sexual predators. 15. Nor does atheism justify or empower politically entrenched authoritarians to sabotage the health and lifespans of billions of people across the world. -Nor does atheism benefit from the very same sabotage that religions cause. But Christianity does. Because you can't sell fraudulent afterlife fire insurance policies to a society of high-functioning adults who are emotionally healthy. You can only sell those "promises" to panic-shoppers who are desperate to be rescued from their own lives and ignorant of all the ways they are being emotionally manipulated and lied to. 16. Nor does atheism mentally condition young people to end up in domestic abusive relationships (by promoting abuse as "what love looks like"). 17. Nor does atheism incentivize the surgical mutilations of infants' and children's genitals. 18. Nor does atheism incentivize and camouflage sexism by claiming that women are here to * get married to fellow churchies, * serve men, * pop out babies, and then * copy/paste religious ideologies into their brains. 19. Nor does atheism try to pressure victims of domestic violence to stay with their abusers by trying to convince them that a Cosmic Sheriff "hates divorce", and then promising that things will get better if they have enough FAITH. 20. Nor does atheism pretend that unlicensed cultists count as legitimate therapists. I could go on. But I think I made my points. Saying "it works" ignores how it works the same or worse ... compared to anything else, and ignores the unethical mechanisms, costs, and the selfishness inherent to how it works.
